Sancred-LEAF and SAMRIDDHI Project

SDC funded Samriddhi project was implemented in Tahirpur Upazila under Sunamganj district through Sancred Welfare Foundation (SWF). This project was started in August 2010. All unions (229 Villages under 63 wards) of Tahirpur Upazila were covered by this project. Total nine staffs worked under SWF in that project. Overall goal of this project was to contribute to sustainable well-being and resilience of poor and extreme poor households in Sunamganj district through social and economic empowerment. There were two outcomes of that project:

Outcome-1: Market and value chain development

Poor and extreme poor men and women in the project intervention area make use of improved employment and income generating opportunities facilitated through value chain and enterprise development and have sustainable access to quality service (information, skill, technology etc.) both private & public.

Outcome-2: Community organization and governance

Poor and extreme poor men and women in the project intervention areas define manage and lobby for their own development priorities and able to secure access to a more enabling environment for their livelihood improvements.

 

Major interventions:

  1. Value chain development
  2. Enterprise development
  3. Service market promotion (knowledge, information, finance etc.)
  4. Buildings human and institutional capacities (Social capital, participation in local governance, gender, DRR)

From the inception period, the major activities of this project are briefly described in the below:

Formation of Community Platform

Total 63 nos. of community Platform had been formed in Tahirpur upazila. Different professionals were involved with those platforms. Main objective of these Platforms is to secure access to a more enabling environment for poor and extreme poor men and women’s livelihood improvement.

List of trainings that provided for the CP leaders, CFs and FMs

Skill development training (leadership, negotiation, networking, fund raising and management) for CP leaders. Total 184 CP leaders received training.

  • Access to khas land (khas land and marshlandl/haor processing). Total 65 CP leaders got this training.
  • Organizational development training for CP leaders and 190 got this training.
  • Organized training on DRR (Disaster Risk Reduction) and CCA (climate change and adaptation) for the CP leaders. 62 CP leaders got this training.
  • Facilitation, negotiation & RTI training for CP leader and Community Facilitator (CF). Total 98 CP leaders and CFs got this training.
  • Organized training on skill development especially Community Planning Process for CFs. Total 164 CF got this training.
  • Organized training on leadership, fund raising and management, linkage and negotiation for the CP leaders. Total 63 CP leaders got this training.
  • 15 female mentors got training on gender issue.

IGA Activities

There were many IGA activities implemented in Tahirpur Upazila under Samriddhi project:

Floating vegetable cultivation, Duck rearing, Foumi hen rearing, Cassava cultivation, Pig rearing, Fish culture, Beef fattening, Goat rearing, Vegetable cultivation, Cow rearing, Buck centre, Bamboo product and Dry fish

Micro Small Enterprise (MSE) Formation

Total 19 MSEs had been formed in Tahirpur upazila. 342 Households were involved in these initiatives. They sold their product on the based on group. Forming those MSE every household got more benefits.

Value Chain information

Samriddhi project worked with 06 value chains like fish, duck, cane craft, beef fattening, vegetable and medicinal plant.

  • To provide training for development value chain
  • Skill development for producer
  • To build up relation with private & public sector
  • Coordination workshop with producer, traders, buyers etc.
  • To create competition in market for produced product.
  • To ensure access in market for poor and extreme poor people.
  • To ensure higher market price.
  • MOU between producer, different companies and LSPs.
  • To develop business profile & business plan for formation of MSE.

Service Provider Association (SPA) 

One Service Provider Association (SPA) had been formed in Tahirpur upazila. Local service providers of different domains had been formed that association. There was an executive committee consisting 07 members. It’s has a constitution and regular monthly meeting have been held. At a glance services of Service Provider Association (SPA):

 

  • Conducted skill development training for LSPs. Total 84 LSPs received this training.
  • Organized total 29 vaccination camps for controlling different diseases of livestock like duck plague, PPR vaccine of goat, Tarka (Anthrax) and Badla disease for Cow.
  • Conducted training on early rice variety (BR-45) for the farmers and 56 farmers received this training.
  • Established 20 nos. of demonstration plots on BR-45 cultivation for disseminating technologies.
  • 09 LSPs participated in workshop on Tarka disease through SPA.
  • 02 workshops organized with private company by the SPA.
  • SPA organized 4 nos. of two day long training on beef fattening for the LSP-Livestock through private company.
  • SPA established two service centers at community level by the LSPs.
  • SPA organized 14 nos. technical sessions at community level by the LSPs.

Formation of CP Network

One CP network had been formed with the assistance of Samriddhi project in Tahirpur Upazila. Total 4 Community platforms were involved in this CP-Network. Basically they formed this CP-Network to meet up on the following issues:

  • Access to khas land
  • To build up their rights and reduce discrimination.
  • To preserve & practice their own culture.
  • To establish cooperative

Linkage with GO-NGO

To build up the relation and strong assistance of Samriddhi project, CP members got different facilities from GO-NGO offices:

  • 05 nos. of sewing machine
  • 212 house hold got 212 sets sanitation materials.
  • 45 households got 45 nos. of pigs
  • 950 nos. of mosquito-curtain
  • 18 nos. of tube-well
  • 220 nos. of VGD card
  • Freedom fighter’s honorarium got 45 people.

Female mentor’s activities

Total 190 female mentors worked in Tahirpur Upazila. Their main activities are given below:

  • To prevent/minimize domestic violence
  • To prevent eve-teasing
  • To stop early marriage and dowry
  • To build up awareness on puberty
  • Legal aids support
  • Provide session on early marriage, child labor, women rights etc.

TBA (Traditional Birth Attendant) activities

Total 53 trained TBA worked at village level. They played vital role in safety delivery for the pregnancy mother at village level. Total 157 safety delivery had been done by the TBAs during project period.

Duck Farm Registration

04 duck farm owners got registration from DLS of Tahirpur by the facilitation of SWF-SAMRIDDHI project. There were 8900 ducks in those farms. ULO physically observed those duck farms & finally gave registration to 04 duck farms.

Access in Local Traditional Structure (LTS)

12 CBO members were involved in LTS (mosque committee-5, mondir committee-3, and primary school-4). 9 were male and 3 were female among these members. They participated in meetings of those institutes & performed a great role to develop of those institutes.

Learning visit

Sancred-Samriddhi project organized two learning visits for poor, EP & Adibahsi on different IGAs (Homestead gardening & space planning, fish trap, vegetable cultivation, fish culture through floating cage, beef fattening, Poultry rearing, vegetable cultivation on floating bed), CP network & organization development. Total 79 CP leaders of different CPs participated in those learning visit. Sancred-Samriddhi project organized another learning visit for SPA & LSP on Service provision.

Day Observation

International Women’s Day, International Literacy Day, Independent Day, International Labor Day, World Environment Day,  International Day of the World’s Indigenous peoples and awareness raising on DRR were observed jointly with UPs, Upazila Parishads and Upazila administration, CNRS- SHARIQUE, Sancred-ICDP & other NGOs. Thematic discussion, Rally, Cultural Competition were the main activities of day observations.
